Part 2 of a 9-part series Welcome to Part Two of the Seahawks 2021 Pre-Draft Checkup!
Today we’re looking at the offensive line.
Turnover, thus far
Out:
Chad Wheeler - released (will not return)
Chance Warmack - opted out, then released; may return
Mike Iupati - retired
In:
Gabe Jackson
Net result: Seattle swapped a starter for a starter but lost 2 backups.
Past and present
Under the current regime, Seattle’s offensive line has been . . . um . . . what’s the word I’m looking for? . . . ah, yes . . .
CRAPTASTIC.
Granted, that’s not the technical term, but it is pretty accurate and so very, very descriptive.
Want proof?
In 2020, Seattle’s offensive line was ranked 16th in the league in pass-blocking.
That actually doesn’t sound bad, right?
(insert comment about “lowered expectations)
It actually isn’t “bad,” per se. And, to be fair, it is sort of an accomplishment in that they (finally) finished ahead of more teams (16) than they Collapse

Arnold grew up in Tacoma and is a graduate of Washington State University. He does, however, have a unique and interesting backstory with the organization.

Part 1 of a 9-part series With the NFL Draft approaching in a couple of weeks, it seems like a good time to take a look at the roster in its current state.
And I haven’t written a 9-part series yet this month, so . . . 2 birds, 1 stone.
Okay, 9 stones, but now we’re splitting hairs.

Ignoring the drama, I think the Hawks have had a fabulous offseason thus far. Surprisingly, it has been much better than I expected it to be.

The Seattle Seahawks have seen a lot of shuffling on the defensive line this offseason, with Carlos Dunlap first released, then brought back. That went along with Jarran Reed’s release, Poona Ford’s extension, the return of Al Woods and signing of Kerry Hyder, and now yet another name has been added to the group.
Aldon Smith has agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source. Smith had his best game of the 2020 season against Seattle, recording three sacks in Week 3. Back in late-January, NFL insider Adam Schefter provided what some assumed was a hot take when he said that he would put the “Over/Under” at 18 in regard to the number of teams that would have a new starting quarterback come Week One of the 2021 season.

Looking back at last year as an example. Seattle traded away their second round pick (64 overall) and were able to add guard Damien Lewis and defensive end Alton Robinson. Lewis started the full season on the offensive line and Robinson added four sacks on defense. However, the Seahawks also traded their third round pick to move up 11 spots in the second round to select Darrell Taylor. This article is the first in a two part draft-related series.
The NFL Draft is only two weeks away, and Pete Carroll and John Schneider currently hold the fewest total selections of their collective tenure with the Seattle Seahawks. With only three picks at 56, 129, and 250, the front office is preparing for a draft unlike any other. Of course, knowing their history and propensity for stockpiling draft capital, the likelihood seems high that they will make an effort to trade back and stock up. Given that the team’s first pick is currently scheduled for the late second round, a likely scenario could see them dealing this selection and moving back into the third round. Apparently, Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic agrees.
He suggests a scenario where Seattle makes a series of trades which ultimately result in their first selection being the 21st pick of the third round, or 85th overall, where Dugar has them drafting Stanford center Drew Dalman. Collapse

The conversation generally begins with “obviously Seattle will trade down” and then discussion continues from there.
But instead of promoting the second-round selection into eight sixth-rounders, perhaps John Schneider has reason(s) to stay put this season.
After all, Schneider did trade down once in the 2020 draft, but the team also traded up twice, something they won’t (shouldn’t) be able to do this year.

After an injury-shortened, unproductive 2020 with the Tennessee Titans, former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has found a new team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Cleveland Browns have signed Clowney to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, which if nothing else shuts down the idea of the Seahawks bringing Clowney back for cheap. Clowney’s previous deal with the Titans was worth up to $13 million.
“I’ve been getting double-teamed an awful lot in this league, in my career,” Clowney said during the virtual news conference. “I’m looking forward to playing with somebody dominant on the other side in Myles Garrett who can draw a double-team. Maybe I can go one-on-one more.”
